UNDERSTAND DESIGN IMPLEMENT MONITOR

UNDERSTAND

The key to building a comprehensive plan is understanding our clients, their financial circumstances, their risk profiles, and their financial goals. We ask the right questions and actively listen to gain an extensive understanding of your needs.

DESIGN

Using financial models, information gathered from the first meeting, and additional financial documents, we develop a plan. We present a personalized and dynamic plan tailored to your unique situation and goals.

IMPLEMENT

Once approved, we begin the implementation process by transferring and consolidating all your assets under one umbrella. We review key issues and use extensive resources available through Raymond James to set up your account for third-party custodial monitoring. All the while, we maintain high transparency, keep you educated and informed, and ensure quality communication throughout.

MONITOR

As a fiduciary, it’s our responsibility to construct, implement, monitor, and review your portfolio on a regular basis to ensure your investments align with your goals and objectives.

Our Approach to Retirement Planning

Winthrop Partners takes a comprehensive, goals-based approach to retirement planning. Building a plan and portfolio that delivers on your vision of the future requires an analytical and intuitive approach.

  • The Analytical: We use powerful financial models to create a portfolio that avoids unnecessary risk and maximizes value.
  • The Intuitive: We get to know our clients to understand what value means to them. We learn what their goals are, what their risk tolerance is, and what financial security looks like to them.

Because retirement is about lifestyle and not just piles of money, a retirement portfolio built purely to increase profits will ultimately disappoint. That is why we work with individuals and families that want complete financial goals, and not just larger returns.

The Winthrop Partners
Retirement Planning Process

The first 3 critical steps in our process are free of charge.

1. Introductory Meeting

1. Introductory Meeting

The key to building an efficient and robust retirement plan is understanding our clients, their financial circumstances, their risk profiles and their financial goals. During our initial phone or in-person introductory meeting, we ask the right questions and actively listen so that we gain an extensive understanding of your needs before building your retirement plan. In addition to establishing a Risk Profile, we request source documents, like tax returns and deferred compensation plans so our models are based on accurate information. Contact us here to book an introductory meeting.

Because we invest in you before you invest in us, our introductory meeting is provided at no charge.

2. The Creation of Your Retirement Plan

2. The Creation of Your Retirement Plan

Using our financial models, information gathered from the first meeting, and additional financial documents, we develop your retirement plan. Once we build your initial plan, we meet to present a personalized and dynamic plan tailored to your unique situation and goals. During this meeting, we make any necessary adjustments, create “what if” scenarios focusing on major elements of the plan and outline actions for implementation. Sometimes a re-assessment of alternatives such as savings, spending rates, retirement dates, and portfolio allocations are made to improve the probability of success.

The creation of your retirement plan is also provided at no charge.

3. Creation of Your Investment Allocation

3. Creation of Your Investment Allocation

As a starting point your risk assessment questionnaire establishes a preliminary allocation of your assets according to your risk profile. During the financial planning process this preliminary allocation is re-examined and then tested over 1,000 times to determine if the allocation works within your overall plan.

Your investment allocation is provided at no charge.

4. Consolidation and Transition of Accounts

4. Consolidation and Transition of Accounts

Once you approve your retirement plan, we use it to refine your investment requirements and develop an Investment Policy that meets your goals. When you move forward with working with us, we begin transferring and consolidating your assets under one umbrella. We review key issues and, using the extensive resources available to us through Raymond James, set up your account for third-party custodial monitoring.

Using an array of stocks, bonds, REITs, and ETFs, we focus on investments that meet our due diligence process and best meet your goals while imposing the least amount of risk.

During this stage of the process there is frequent communication on an as-needed basis to ensure that the client is informed of the markets and confident of their investments. We maintain high transparency and keep you educated and informed.

5. Management, Reporting, and Discussion

5. Management, Reporting, and Discussion

As a fiduciary it is our responsibility to construct, implement, monitor, and review your retirement portfolio on a regular basis to ensure that your investments are aligned with your financial goals.
Retirement management is a dynamic process that evolves as your assets grow, and life changes occur. We update your portfolio to ensure it adapts to your new goals.

You will receive monthly reports on your portfolio from Raymond James. Additionally, we use specilized software to create customized reports that provide more detail on your portfolio’s, asset allocation balance and performance ot the assets you’re keenly interested in.

We meet with you annually and at your request. During your engagement with us, we constantly review your portfolio and make any adjustments that may be beneficial to your financial goals.

Our Approach to Investment Management

Investment management is about risk management.

  • When investing, the biggest risk to investors is price volatility – how quickly
and how drastically the price can fluctuate.
  • Other forms of risk can be more psychological in nature. For example, a desire to exit the market when investment values steeply decline.

At Winthrop Partners, we create portfolios that are aligned with each client’s goals, personality, and risk tolerance. We get to know each client personally, assess their level of risk, analyze their current assets, then create an investment profile and allocation that is unique to them.

Let’s Meet

What’s Included in Our Retirement Planning Services

With clear insight into the market at the beginning of the year and updates when markets become volatile, our communication strategy keeps clients informed and assured.

RETIREMENT PLANNING

INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT

REPORTING & COMMUNICATIONS

Debt and Spending Analysis

We measure the client’s debt and spending habits and how those habits will impact retirement.

Initial Understanding

We start with gaining an understanding of you, your familiarity with the markets, what you expect of us your appetite for risk and your ability to absorb risk.

We are available to you

We provide you with our cell phone numbers which makes us available to you during working hours and beyond because life happens outside 9-5.

Asset and Income Coordination

We ensure that our client’s assets and income are working together to achieve their specific financial goals.

Creating a risk profile

A basic evaluation of your risk profile is then created as a starting point for the planning process.  For most wealth managers this is where the risk process ends, but at Winthrop, your initial profile simply provides a basis for asset allocation, which is checked, re-checked, and confirmed.

Weekly Market Updates

We send a weekly market commentary including a review of the previous week’s equity, alternative asset, bond, and foreign exchange indices.  This information regularly updates you on the forces impacting your portfolio.

Retirement Cash Flow Planning and Budgeting

We establish a solid plan for the client’s retirement, so they understand how their money is going to work for them and where their money is going to come from.

Portfolios must not exceed your appetite for risk

If the risks exceed your appetite you are vulnerable to exiting the market at the lows guaranteeing losses. However, a certain amount of risk must be taken to help achieve your goals.

Weekly Economic Updates

We update you weekly on the previous week’s national and international economic activity.

Tax Strategy

We help develop a plan of action for reducing taxes as they relate to your investment situation.  While remaining true to the underlying investment principles we use tax-efficient strategies to ensure tax efficiency.

Note: we do not provide tax advice.

Allocation is the Key

A well-designed portfolio allocation can help coordinate the amount of investment that you make, the timing of your retirement, and your spending patterns. Allocation determines the lion’s share of returns.

Quarterly Capital Markets Update

Every quarter, we provide a Capital Markets Update to our clients from Raymond James, providing an in-depth and multifaceted review of the markets.

Insurance Review

As a part of our client’s annual financial plan review, a thorough analysis of their existing insurance policies may uncover more attractively priced and or better-aligned policies.

Note: we do not sell life insurance.

Planning further Informs Allocation

During the planning process, the results of investment risks are brought to the forefront as well as likely returns emanating from your portfolio. The planning process helps create your unique portfolio with the appropriate amount of risk and return for you.

Economic Calendar

We provide you with a two-week calendar of scheduled economic announcements from the Fed and other government agencies together with experts’ consensus estimates of the key data related to the announcements.  Each week we provide a recap of last week’s actual data vs estimates allowing you to gauge future estimates’ accuracy.

Estate Attorney Meeting Preparation

We review finances and documents such as wills, power of attorney, and other tools that assist in the management of your estate. We then prepare and organize all necessary documents and information for meetings with an estate attorney.

Investment Selection

We create a customized investment plan that maximizes after tax returns, diversifies across asset classes, meets your cash flow requirements, and avoids unnecessary risk. We use time-tested methodologies to select from the infinite universe of stocks, bonds, ETFs  REITS, and other funds to build an appropriate portfolio for you.

Email recaps after major market events

After something major occurs in the market that could be disconcerting to investors, we send out a memo that describes the situation, the potential impact on their portfolio, and any adjustments we might make or simply provide support and reassurance that the impact should resolve itself over time.

Online access to portfolio overview and simulation tools

The “Play Zone” is a collaborative, online tool that allows clients to adjust changing factors such as age of retirement, spending goals, and investments, while instantly seeing the impacts of those variables.

Tax-Efficient Portfolio Transition

Transitioning a taxable portfolio to a portfolio that is more in line with your personal goals is done with capital gains taxes front of mind.  We provide strategies for transitioning portfolios and managing capital gains.

Email updates on changes made across our clients’  portfolios

Any changes that occur across our clients’ portfolios receive an emailed explanation of our action and the reason for the action.

Monitoring and Maintenance

Once a portfolio is designed, it needs to be monitored, rebalanced, and adjusted for changing economic, tax, and personal circumstances as well as the performance of the underlying securities.

Portfolio discussion meetings

Whether it’s a formal annual review, quarterly telephonic update, or at the customer’s discretion, we are always available and accessible for our client’s financial questions.
